• Eritrean Mered Medhanie aka The General is being extradited from Italy. He was the leader of one of Europe's largest criminal operations for illegally smuggling migrants across Africa. His operation cost up to EUR5,000 (PS3,900, $5,680). According to police, at least 359 migrants drowned when their boat capsized near Lampedusa in Italy in October 2013.
• The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry has proposed the final names of four new chemical elements: nihonium, moscovium, tennessine and oganesson (atomic numbers 113 and 115).
• Maria Sharapova, a Russian tennis star, was suspended by the International Tennis Federation for two years after she failed a drug test for meldonium during the Australian Open.
• A Papua New Guinea court has issued an injunction prohibiting university students from protesting at campus. Students across the country have been boycotting classes and protesting for weeks, calling for Peter O'Neill to resign over corruption allegations.
• A United Nations commission has recommended that Eritrea be referred the International Criminal Court to investigate alleged crimes against humanity in Eritrea, which include the enslavement and military conscription of 300,000 to 400,000 people.
• Students at the University of Papua New Guinea were protesting against Prime Minister Peter O'Neill's government when police opened fire. Seven people were injured and four have been killed. According to police, no one was hurt and nobody was injured. A university spokesperson claimed that police used tear gas.
