- HMCS Charlottetown sunk in Gulf of Saint Lawrence On September 11, 1942, the Canadian corvette HMCS Charlottetown was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-517 in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, near Cap Chat, Quebec. The ship had just delivered a convoy to Rimouski and was returning to Gaspé. Ten of her crew members were lost in the attack. source: canada.ca
- Japanese destroyer Yayoi sunk in Pacific Theater On September 11, 1942, the Japanese destroyer Yayoi was bombed by Allied B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft approximately 20 miles east of Normanby Island, resulting in a direct hit near the stern. The attack led to uncontrollable flooding, and the ship sank shortly thereafter. The commander of Destroyer Division 30, Captain Shiro Yasutake, was among the 68 crew members killed in the attack.
