The accident resulted in 20 fatalities and 6 survivors. An investigation by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) concluded that pilot error, specifically failing to notice and correct an unintentional descent during visual flight in unsuitable conditions, was the primary cause. The AAIB also noted inadequate monitoring of flight instruments and the absence of an audio altitude warning system as contributing factors.
